What Does Day One In Amsterdam With Kids Look Like?

Choose one main museum and a nearby outdoor break for day one, with a cruise only if it fits your family’s pace. Museumplein is south of the main canal ring, so allow the actual journey to a dock or the Jordaan. Reserve the main visit rather than assuming everything else is a walk-in.

Museumplein gives you space for a break, but the large “I amsterdam” letters were removed from here in 2018. Follow posted rules around water features rather than treating them as paddling pools. Which Museums In Amsterdam Actually Work For Children?

NEMO offers hands-on science, Van Gogh and Rijksmuseum offer art, and ARTIS is a zoo with an included aquarium and planetarium. Choose from the child’s interests. NEMO’s standard rate is €21.50 from age 4; free and reduced categories differ from the art museums. The Gallery of Honour is not a ground-floor Rijksmuseum route.

NEMO’s experiments can be a main visit for children, with some activities intended for ages 6 and up. Under-13s need adult accompaniment. Standard admission is €21.50 from age 4, while 0–3s are free; check student and pass exceptions. Its visitor page explains the free outdoor roof, currently Tuesday–Sunday 10:00–17:30 via eastern stairs. For 3–4 October 2026, the museum offers free Weekend of Science admission through its separate special-ticket reservation; use that if it applies instead of paying standard entry.

Rijksmuseum can work as a focused art visit if the family wants it. The Gallery of Honour and Night Watch are on the second floor; choose an accessible route and do not assume you can leave for lunch and re-enter. What Should Day Two Look Like: Cruises, The Zoo And The East?

Day two can stay in the east for ARTIS and lunch in the Plantage. Leave the afternoon free or choose another visit only if the family wants it. There is no need for a second cruise or a trip to Noord after the zoo.

ARTIS can be the main visit for a family interested in animals. Compare the current online date and child categories. The aquarium reopened 13 June 2026, and the official zoo FAQ includes it and the planetarium with zoo entry. After ARTIS, choose lunch nearby and allow the time your family actually needs. The Jewish Cultural Quarter is another history choice in the east, not a required add-on. If you saved the family cruise for this day, check its actual departure and travel to Stadhouderskade; it is not an untimed boat at the zoo gate.

Compare the boat’s boarding steps, toilet, cover and actual duration before buying. A child who prefers a short outdoor ride may not enjoy seventy-five minutes of audio; the free IJ ferry is another water experience. The Blue Boat wheelchair place must be confirmed before booking, with boarding at its Hard Rock dock.

If a viewpoint is the priority, choose Lookout as a separate Noord visit via the free Buiksloterweg ferry. Check its actual closing, child categories and visibility. The linked entry-with-drink ticket excludes the swing and VR; swing eligibility includes a 1.20 m minimum height and other conditions, not simply any child tall enough.

Where Should You Take Kids On Day Three In Amsterdam?

Use day three for the history visit you actually reserved, a maritime museum visit or an unbooked park afternoon. Anne Frank House requires its own official reservation. A Jewish Quarter walk is a different experience, and another cruise is optional if you have not already taken one.

Consider whether the child is ready for the historical content and steep stairs at Anne Frank House. Adults currently pay €16.50, ages 10–17 €7 and ages 0–9 €1, including the booking fee. Tickets are sold only through the museum’s own site; no door sales or authorised resellers. The regular release is Tuesday 10:00 local Amsterdam time six weeks ahead, subject to the calendar. The Maritime Museum is another option for ships and sea history. If also choosing your one cruise, compare the museum-and-Blue-Boat bundle with separate admission. The 75-minute cruise departs from Stadhouderskade, not the museum; plan the journeys separately and confirm access.

Close with a meal or public canal walk if the family has had enough bookings. If you specifically prefer an evening cruise, choose it instead of the daytime sailing, checking bedtime, darkness and the actual boat. No itinerary can promise how a teenager or toddler will react.

For lodging, compare the same dates and family occupancy, including taxes and room layout, rather than assuming every hotel two tram stops out is better. For transport, check stroller rules, lift availability and the actual route; do not assume every station is step-free throughout. F3 to Buiksloterweg runs day and night, while F4 to NDSM has its own timetable. Each traveller using OVpay needs the correct eligible card or device and must check in and out.
