Is The I Amsterdam City Card Worth It?

The I amsterdam City Card can combine attractions and, with the Total Experience variant, public transport. It is useful only when its included experiences match your trip and the arithmetic works for your actual party.

Start with the museums, cruise and journeys you want, then compare individual tickets with the correct pass variant. This guide explains the exclusions, activation and reservation rules, with a calculator for your own current quotes.

What Is The I Amsterdam City Card?

There are two I amsterdam City Card variants. Total Experience is an hourly sightseeing pass with GVB transport, one participating canal cruise and a 24-hour bike rental. Explorer lets you select 3, 5 or 7 activities within five consecutive days and excludes GVB transport. Compare the exact variant and current price before deciding whether it suits your trip.

The linked Total Experience product is digital and offers 24-, 48-, 72-, 96- or 120-hour durations. You need the I amsterdam City Card app on a smartphone, add the code from your confirmation and activate the card when you are ready to start. A physical Total Experience card uses different activation mechanics: its first use starts it.

According to the official City Card FAQ, an unactivated Total Experience card remains valid for one year from purchase. Once activated, its consecutive hours run continuously: a 24-hour card activated at 17:00 expires at 17:00 the next day. Booking a required attraction time slot does not activate it.

Explorer is digital only and expires when its chosen activity count is used or its five consecutive days end. It is not the same product as the hourly pass linked here, and neither is the separate Go City Explorer brand. Use the official purchase page to compare the two I amsterdam variants and their current adult and child prices.

Do not assume every seller has an identical price, refund policy or ticket format. Check those details for the actual purchase. The linked Total Experience listing allows a maximum of ten cards per booking; a displayed voucher operating window does not mean activation must start at midnight.

What The Card Includes And What It Leaves Out

Total Experience includes selected attractions and GVB transport, one participating cruise and one 24-hour bike rental. Explorer uses activity choices and does not include GVB. Both exclude Van Gogh Museum and Anne Frank House. Reservations are still required at some included venues, and a discounted attraction is not the same as free entry.

The current official activity list includes Rijksmuseum, NEMO, Stedelijk, ARTIS Zoo, Rembrandt House and A'DAM LOOKOUT. Check the individual location and any special exhibition or extra before counting its value. One included visit does not mean unlimited repeat admission to the same museum.

The Van Gogh ticket selector currently lists €25 adult admission, with under-18s free and separate concessions. Anne Frank House is official-site-only at €16.50 for adults, with child and eligible pass rates on its own ticket page. The City Card gives no Anne Frank discount, while Museumkaart visitors currently reserve for €1.

A premium private charter, drinks package, evening departure or Light Festival cruise is not automatically the included cruise. Check the participating operator, dock and redemption conditions. The official FAQ currently describes daytime redemption from 10:00 to 18:00; confirm the service you want rather than buying a second cruise unnecessarily.

The transport benefit covers GVB services, including its night buses. It excludes NS trains and other operators such as Connexxion, Arriva and EBS. Budget Schiphol rail or airport-bus travel separately. The public IJ ferries are already free, so their use does not create a pass saving.

The Maths: When Does The Card Pay For Itself?

The card saves money only when the actual price of the included activities and transport you would otherwise buy exceeds the pass price. Apply age discounts and existing passes first, count each included visit once, and exclude activities you would not choose without the card. There is no reliable rule that three or four museums automatically make it worthwhile.

Write down a realistic itinerary with enough time to enjoy each place. Use the correct individual ticket prices for your party, then compare the current pass quote plus anything it excludes. Separate Van Gogh and Anne Frank House spending appears on both sides if you intend to visit them either way; the City Card does not reduce those costs.

These are comparison examples, not a recommended schedule or a promise that every visitor pays standard rates. NEMO with an art museum, a cruise and several journeys can make a busy day. If that pace is not enjoyable or slots do not fit, a paper saving is not useful.

For Explorer, compare its selected activity count and five-day window with the individual costs of those exact activities. Add transport separately. For Total Experience, compare the whole duration rather than multiplying a one-day transport price across every day: standalone multi-day GVB tickets have different prices.

Use the calculator below with current euro quotes. If the two totals are equal, the decision is convenience and flexibility, not a monetary saving. Leave out a rental or cruise that you would otherwise skip.

How Does The Card Compare With The Museumkaart?

Museumkaart is a separate museum membership costing €75 for adults aged 19 and over or €39 through age 18. It covers Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh admission, unlike the City Card's Van Gogh exclusion. Its temporary visitor card allows five museum visits within 31 days; the card is not a transport or canal-cruise bundle.

The official Museumkaart visitor FAQ explains buying a temporary card at a participating museum and registering it for longer use. The purchase museum counts as the first visit. Check registration and delivery arrangements for your circumstances; do not assume a temporary card alone grants a year of unlimited visits.

At the Anne Frank House, Museumkaart holders currently pay €1 including the booking fee and still need an official timed reservation. That is a benefit, not an exclusion. Micropia and ARTIS-Groote Museum accept Museumkaart; the main ARTIS Zoo does not share that free-entry benefit.

Compare the actual itinerary under each option. Two €25 museum tickets total €50, below an adult Museumkaart; three total €75, equal to it before other costs. Cheaper museums, free children, supplements and additional visits change the calculation. There is no universal winner for a three-day break.

The City Card may suit someone using its included attractions, transport and cruise, while Museumkaart may suit a different museum list or a wider Netherlands trip. Do You Still Need To Book Time Slots With The Card?

Some included venues still require a reservation. Rijksmuseum City Card holders need a start time, and NEMO and Moco have their own booking instructions. Use the City Card's official time-slot page for each location; making that reservation does not activate the card. A pass does not guarantee immediate admission.

Arrange the visits that matter before building a tight schedule around them. There is no universal “book the evening before” rule: availability varies by date and exhibition. Keep the slot confirmation and valid card ready at the entrance, with any other evidence required for your ticket.

Rijksmuseum publishes exemptions for Friends and ICOM/ICOMOS holders, but ordinary City Card admission is not one of those exceptions. A'DAM LOOKOUT, in contrast, currently allows eligible City Card entry without a reserved slot; its swing and other extras follow separate rules. The correct instruction depends on the venue.

The Heineken Experience is an 18+ brewery attraction with its own City Card offer and booking process. Check the current discount and final price instead of counting it as free museum admission. Choose it because you want the brewery experience, not to add another line to a savings calculation.

Is The Transport Side Of The Card Good Value?

GVB transport is included with Total Experience, not Explorer. Its value is what you would otherwise spend on the journeys you actually take. A GVB 24-hour ticket currently costs €10, but a short walking itinerary or a few OVpay trips can cost less. The free IJ ferries add no monetary value to a pass.

Count journeys and ticket validity rather than taps or vehicle changes. A check-in and check-out are not two fares, and a transfer within a valid one-hour ticket is not necessarily a new €3.40 purchase. Three separate one-hour tickets cost €10.20; three tram rides can have a different total.

Use the getting-around guide for OVpay and ticket use. NS rail and the airport bus are outside this City Card benefit. For more distant sightseeing, compare the actual operator and route rather than assuming every service within the Amsterdam area is GVB.

Who Should Skip The Card Altogether?

Individual tickets can be the better choice for a short attraction list, mostly free walks or visits excluded from the card. Families should compare each child's actual admission and transport eligibility separately. A child card is available for ages 4–17 only when bought with an adult card, but it is not automatically a saving.

Rijksmuseum is free through age 18, while Van Gogh is free below 18. NEMO's standard price starts at age four, and other venues use different age bands. A family calculation that prices every child as an adult overstates the pass's value; one that assumes all children are free can understate it.

If your priorities are Van Gogh, Anne Frank House and independent canal walks, start with those separate tickets and any real transport needs. You do not need to add more attractions simply to justify a City Card.

For a cruise-and-cycling day, compare the actual included operators, rental conditions and separate quotes. It may or may not cost less individually. Do not count an unfamiliar city bike ride as essential just because it comes with a pass; choose walking, public transport or another activity if cycling is not suitable.
