Amsterdam can cost a lot, but the useful question is what your own trip will cost. Use actual accommodation quotes, apply free and concession admission, and choose the meals, journeys and experiences you want.

Is Amsterdam Expensive Compared To Other European Cities?

Amsterdam can be expensive, especially when your dates produce a high accommodation quote or your plans include several paid attractions. But a useful comparison with another city needs the same dates, room type, passengers and activities. There is no single price ranking that describes every visitor's trip.

A standard adult Rijksmuseum or Van Gogh ticket currently costs €25. A museum-heavy couple's day therefore differs sharply from a family using free age categories or a day of independent canal walks. A walking day with no paid attraction also needs no sightseeing pass.

Accommodation should be compared as a full stay, including the applicable taxes and journeys from the property. An outer room is not automatically half the price of a central one, and Amsterdam's cafés, taxis or beer are not reliably priced by a city-wide comparison with Berlin or Brussels.

What Do Amsterdam's Museums And Attractions Cost?

Standard adult entry is €25 at Rijksmuseum and €25 at Van Gogh. Rijksmuseum is free through age 18; Van Gogh is free below 18. Anne Frank House adult entry is €16.50 including the booking fee, with separate child and concession categories.

Use the current official information from Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh, Anne Frank House and LOOKOUT. For two adults and two 17-year-olds visiting both Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh, the standard admission total is €100. Two adults alone pay that same amount; the free child places should be applied before any pass comparison.

Moco, Fabrique des Lumières and STRAAT offer different kinds of art rather than universally cheaper substitutes. How Much Does Transport In Amsterdam Cost?

A GVB one-hour ticket costs €3.40 and a 24-hour ticket €10 in 2026. Those are ticket prices, not a fixed charge for each ride or contactless tap. Compare your actual journeys, and give each paying traveller their own valid ticket or payment card/device.

GVB's price information and the transport guide explain the choices. Three separately purchased one-hour tickets cost €10.20, but three rides need not require three tickets. Contactless journeys can cost less or more than a particular prepaid option; compare the travel you expect rather than assuming a day pass always wins.

The public IJ ferries are free for ordinary pedestrian and cycle use without a GVB ticket. NDSM and Buiksloterweg are different crossings with different timetables, so check the return service for a late visit. Walking and ferries may cover your day without paid local transport.

What Do Food, Drink And Nightlife Cost?

Food and nightlife costs depend on the actual menu or event, the portions and drinks you choose, and any entry or service charges. A canal view does not guarantee an inflated price, and walking two streets away does not guarantee a cheaper meal.

Broodjes, haring, bitterballen, fries and market stalls offer different quick-food choices. Compare portions and extras rather than treating every snack as a complete lunch. Brown cafés, Jordaan and De Pijp can be enjoyable places to eat and drink, but use their current menus instead of assuming one fixed beer price across the neighbourhood.

The Heineken Experience is a paid visit inside the former brewery, not a working-brewery tour or a cheap substitute for dinner. Its standard adult tour takes about 90 minutes and includes one beer; tour plus rooftop adds a second beer, while rooftop-only does not include the tour. All visitors must be 18+ and should bring ID. For a club, concert or cocktail bar, check the specific programme, ticket tier, age policy and any wardrobe or booking fees. An attraction ticket does not admit you to a separate nightclub. Where Does Amsterdam Quietly Cost You More?

Check the full accommodation total, including any taxes or mandatory fees not already included, plus the travel needed from that address. Breakfast, towels, luggage storage and cancellation conditions can also change a cheap headline into a different purchase.

Amsterdam's tourist tax is 12.5% of the overnight amount excluding VAT. Dutch VAT on the relevant accommodation supply became 21% in 2026 under the tax authority's rules. An accommodation amount of €150 excluding VAT and tourist tax produces €18.75 tourist tax; a VAT-inclusive advertised rate is not that same amount. Do not add a tax twice if the quote already includes it.

A separate €15 day-tourist tax applies to the qualifying cruise-passenger category. It is not a charge that every canal-cruise customer must add. Check what your cruise operator's invoice already includes rather than treating it as a universal visitor fee.

Residential holiday rentals require a permit and registration and are subject to annual letting limits and a four-guest maximum for that category. The municipal rules are distinct from the rules for commercial accommodation. A licensed hostel family room does not automatically share that four-person maximum.

Dates matter. Amsterdam Dance Event runs 21–25 October 2026, but no event guarantees that every hotel is full or that every other autumn week is cheap. Test nearby dates with actual accommodation quotes and check cancellation terms.

How Can You Keep Amsterdam Affordable?

Use free and concession admission first, choose only the transport you need, and compare the actual inclusions of any pass or tour. Independent canal walks, parks and public ferries can fill a day without buying an attraction ticket.

For a covered canal cruise, the selected BlueBoat option lasts 75 minutes with audio commentary. Choose the departure dock and passenger categories, and add snacks only if wanted. Wheelchair space requires confirmation before purchase. A different premium, dinner or private boat may suit another visit; it should be compared on its actual service rather than a claimed universal price floor.

Museumkaart currently costs €75 for adults aged 19+ and €39 through 18. A temporary card bought at a museum permits five visits within 31 days, including the purchase visit. Three €25 visits total €75: that is equality, not a saving, and free-age visitors should not be charged adult arithmetic. Anne Frank House Museumkaart holders pay €1 including booking fee; main ARTIS Zoo is separate from participating Groote Museum and Micropia.

The I amsterdam City Card's Total Experience variant includes GVB plus eligible visits, a participating cruise and bike rental for consecutive hours. Explorer offers a selected activity count over five consecutive days and excludes transport. Both exclude Van Gogh and Anne Frank House. The pass comparison starts with your actual choices, not a promise that three museums always pay for the card.

A tip-based guided walk can add context without a fixed admission charge. The English overview lasts about 2.5 hours, accepts card or electronic contributions and permits bookings of up to six with no splitting a larger party. It needs at least five attendees to operate; dates and cancellation conditions belong to the host. Independent walking does not require a guide contribution.

For an illustrative day, one €25 adult museum plus a chosen €25 food allowance equals €50 before accommodation, airport travel and any other purchases. That food figure is your allowance, not a guarantee of particular meals. Add only the services you need and leave some room for changes of plan.
